An Altar for Dust and Dirt

An Altar for Dust and Dirt is a wooden box that houses several functional cleaning tools. The lid doubles as a brush, with Tampico fibers concealed underneath, while the drawer functions as a dustpan. A circular brush is attached to a brass rod threaded at both ends. The rod serves as a handle for the larger lid brush, while the circular brush can be removed and used independently. Inside the box, a removable semicircular brush serves both as a support for the dustpan and as another cleaning tool.

I designed the brushes with shapes that limit where and how they can be used, encouraging exploration and discovery through the act of cleaning. I wanted to create an object that brings greater attention and care to an otherwise routine task.
